Mom's Best Friend: dads & other labor support people
Does she seem like a different person now that she's pregnant?  Want to help her through the upcoming birth?  Many dads (and other birth partners) are uncertain about how to help during pregnancy and what they are supposed to do during labor.  You may feel confused, worried, or intimidated about what will be expected of you when Birth Day dawns.  This class is designed to help ease your mind and give you the knowlege and skills to help her in a way that is comfortable for you.

Mom's Best Friend: understanding the dad's (or other birth partner's) role in labor and birth (Birth Matters, Session 2)

Many dads have ambivalent feelings about how to get involved in pregnancy and participate in labor.  This class will cover:
  • ways dads can be comfortably involved during the pregnancy
  • what happens during a typical natural childbirth
  • the expectant mom's wishes for the ways she wants to be supported throughout the rest of her pregnancy and in labor, so that you can know what she expects
  • how the birth partner feels most comfortable giving support (not always the same as what she wants!) and how to plan together for a positive birth experience for both of you
  • a discussion of other sources of support that may be helpful to the pregnant and laboring mom
  • c
ommon variations of labor, and how to be a great birth partner, no matter what happens during the birth

What was helpful about the class?  Dave, an expectant dad commented, "covering the coaching styles" will help him "be prepared to help."  And learning about different events that can occur during birth helped him "to be aware of what to expect."

Joe, also an expectant dad, noted that he appreciated the chance to refine the couple's relaxation technique, and received "a better understanding of what is physically taking place" during birth.  After the class, he felt better prepared for "keeping [his] spouse comfortable and meeting her needs" during labor.

Jennifer, an expectant mom, noted that she believed that learning "what kind of coach my husband would be," will be helpful to her in their upcoming birth.
