Are you techno-savvy?
So many tests and procedures are possible during pregnancy!  How do you know which ones are important and which can be skipped?  And while most moms desire as intervention-free a birth as possible, they may overestimate their ability to negotiate during birth.  As one new mom recently said, "I thought it wouldn't happen to me.  But when I was actually in labor, I just wasn't able to think."  Another new mom said, "I was just so tired.  I gave in."  While appropriate when necessary, many interventions are applied during labor without trying other, simple alternatives that really can make a difference to a tired, hungry, hurting mom.

Techno-Sense (Birth MattersTM, Session 5)

Tests, procedures and interventions have their place.  Obviously, safety of mom and baby are paramount to all concerned!  And some pregnancies and labors genuinely need the help of interventions to get back "on track."  On the other hand, when applied in place of or before trying other, safer and gentler methods, those same interventions are unnecessary.  How do you know when it's time to turn to a test, technology or intervention?  In this class you will:
  • understand a variety of tests, technologies and interventions that are possible during pregnancy and birth, including what they are & how they work
  • learn about their potential risks and possible benefits
  • learn about possible alternatives, including just waiting
  • get information about cesarean deliveries, including when a cesarean is appropriate
  • and most importantly, know how to tell when it is sensible to use techonology and when it is simply non-sense
  • for homebirth couples, it is important to be aware of what technologies might be used in case of a transfer of care or transport to the hospital
