Why a waterbirth?
Giving birth in water is not likely to be a fad. Laboring in water helps lower mothers' blood pressures and helps prevent tearing. Many mothers enjoy the bouyancy of the water at a time when she likely feels very uncomfortable on land. Laboring in water also allows mothers to switch positions much more easily. Birthing in water provides a gentler transition for the baby as he or she exits one watery environment only to enter another. Under the eye of an experienced health care provider, waterbirth is safe, and enables more mothers to birth without pain medications than birthing on land.
Mermaid Moms (Birth Matters, Session 3)
Taught by a mother who has used water in all four of her births, including two waterbirths, this class gives you the tools to use water effectively to ease pain during your labor. You will have the opportunity to view several waterbirths. In addition, you will learn:
many ways you can use water to ease pain during labor no matter where you give birth
how the father or labor partner can help during a water labor or waterbirth
why and how showers can be great labor aids
certain moments in labor when particular water techniques have the most impact
benefits and risks of waterbirth
facilities (including at home) where waterbirth is allowed
commonsense precautions to use during waterbirths
Dennis, an expectant dad, said this class was "all good" and he enjoyed "everything" about the class!
Sarah, an expectant mom, commented that this class "re-affirmed [that waterbirth] would be a good decision for me" and she enjoyed that the class was "open, laid back."
