A Cooperative Method of Natural Birth Control

Breastfeeding and Natural Child Spacing

This classic book, written by a former La Leche League leader, explains how breastfeeding, when frequent and unrestricted, normally provides a mother on average with 14 1/2 months of complete natural infertility--no periods or ovulations. This book goes beyond "birth control" to explain how, when a mother goes the extra mile in meeting her baby's emotional and physical needs, she will normally not become pregnant again for over a year. While some mothers may follow all the recommendations in this book and still have an early return of her periods, this is unusual. As a fertility educator, I have observed that these early cycles typically show signs of less than normal fertility in other ways. The overall message is that by meeting baby's needs, baby usually ensures that his mother can focus just on him for a time, something that is normally a very fulfilling and joyfilled experience for both of them.
